Gators don't plan to overlook Troy

Gators don't plan to overlook Troy: "

It's not exactly what you'd call a traditional "trap" game.

On paper, No. 1 Florida isn't expected to have much trouble on Saturday against Troy. But there is that one little thing: Tennessee is up next week.

So what's the possibility that the Gators might just look past Troy in anticipation of next week's showdown with the Vols? None whatsoever, UF coach Urban Meyer said.

"I think we're an intelligent, mature team and we're facing a team we faced a couple of years ago and we had to hold on to beat them,'' Meyer said referring to the Gators' 59-31 victory in 2007. "The best thing that happened to us is when they should have beat LSU, they outplayed LSU last year (a 40-31 loss after leading 31-3). So our guys are ready. I've watched the way they prepared, they are ready to play.''

The Florida players have been extremely careful in not saying one word about Tennessee the past two weeks, insisting as they have since the preseason that after last year's Ole Miss loss at home, they've learned to keep their focus solely on the week's upcoming opponent.

"We know how important it is to take it just one game at a time, one week at a time,'' sophomore RB Jeff Demps said. "If you're not focused on the team you're playing, anybody can beat you at any time.''

For Troy, Saturday's game represents an opportunity to prove that its season-opening loss to Bowling Green wasn't indicative of the kind of team the Trojans are.

"It gives us a chance to come back and show the world that we can still contend with the big-time teams,'' wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan said.

As for being the underdog? QB Levi Brown said it's a role he's become accustomed to.

"I like being the underdog,'' Brown said. "I’m used to it. It’s been that way throughout my career."

Florida safety Ahmad Black says he'll continue to play hard, starter or not

Florida safety Ahmad Black says he'll continue to play hard, starter or not: "

When Florida coach Urban Meyer says the Gators have enough depth, particularly on defense, so that every day you have to practice like you're fighting for a starting job, he's not kidding.

Gators' junior safety Ahmad Black had a nation-tying seven interceptions last season. But in Florida's season opener, it was sophomore Will Hill who got the start. Although Black obviously isn't thrilled that he didn't start, he said he's fine with the decision made by the coaching staff.

"I'm a team player,'' he said. "As long as we get in there, we've got three great guys back there in the rotation. We rotated it real good, all of us got the same amount of plays.''

To be fair, there are several positions, including offensive line, where Meyer and other position coaches have said there are no set starters, just a certain number of guys who will get significant playing time the position.

"Guys all understand if they come in and work hard, they are all going to get a chance to play,'' defensive coordinator Charlie Strong said.

However, sometimes it is an adjustment for some player

"We talked about it,'' Black said of conversations he's had with the other safeties. "A lot of us have got to get used to it. Coming out of high school, a lot of us were great players, probably the best players on the team. Coming to college, you know you've got to split time with other great players. It'll all work out.''

Florida freshman Andre Debose will have surgery, miss entire season

Florida freshman Andre Debose will have surgery, miss entire season: "

The hamstring injury that has hampered freshman WR Andre Debose for the past several months will have to be surgically repaired, UF coach Urban Meyer said following Tuesday's practice.

Debose, a star recruit from Sanford Seminole, will not play this season.

"It looks like the decision’s been made, he’s going to have surgery,'' Meyer said. "They haven’t given me a date yet. It’s a tendon where the muscle is detached from the bone that they are going to attach. It’s a significant time period. He won’t play this season.''

For the past week, Debose and his parents, along with UF team doctors and trainers, have been studying his options and working with other doctors who are more familiar with the injury. Asked how he took the news, Meyer said: "tough".

"He wanted to really play, but that's where he has the support of a great mom and dad,'' Meyer said. "Really, he's crushed. But he also understands that this is a marathon, not a sprint. So he's going to get fixed.''

Head coach Urban Meyer and senior quarterback Tim Tebow addressed the media at their weekly press conference.

Below are excerpts from their comments following last Saturday’s 62-3 win over Charleston Southern and looking ahead to the game against Troy on Sept. 12.

Head Coach Urban Meyer - On Florida’s running game:

“Everything is personnel-based. Good recruiting. These young men are high-character people who take things seriously. They all pull for each other. The only thing they said to each other was, ‘Great win,’ and had big smiles on their faces. Emmanuel Moody went in during the third quarter. Coach [Kenny] Carter has done a tremendous job, but it’s also a testament to who these young men are.”

On the chemistry between Tim Tebow and Riley Cooper:

“It is very undervalued. Tim has great chemistry with a lot of guys. Riley is going through a phase in his life right now where he realizes it’s last call. We’ve had some guys come speak to the team about that. Some guys think they always have next game, next year. Riley has 11 shots left. He’s playing like it, and he’s practicing like it. We’ve got two practices a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so he has maybe 23 or 24 practices left. Even more than chemistry is the guys taking a more serious approach to football.”

On why he likes the up-tempo style:

“I think Tim [Tebow] is good at it. I think it’s all personnel-based, and I made the comment that it’s just in the beginning phases because basically we ran one set. We’ve got the ability with a guy like Aaron Hernandez, you can be in a multitude of sets and add [Jeff] Demps and [Chris] Rainey-type bodies. I just liked it because Tim is very good at it, and I think that our offensive line handles it very well because they realize we’re in a advantage getting them to the line of scrimmage real fast. Those two runs by Demps we’re perfect examples. They were out of the shoot like that (snaps fingers), because either lineman issues on defense or fatigue issues. [That] is something that I think that should be, our conditioning the way that Coach Mick [Mickey Marotti] gets our guys conditioned, that should be a strength.”

On offensive play calling:

“We were very vanilla on offense, other than tempo. I mean, bizarre vanilla, painfully vanilla. But tempo, we have to practice it, and we don’t mind. It’s out there and it’s fine, and we had to practice it. But if you looked at our sets, there were three sets over the whole night. You guys have been covering us for a while and know that it’s usually 12 to 15 different sets. So, painfully vanilla.”

On communication worked during the game with new members on the coaching staff:

“The issue would be the guy on the sideline [Steve Addazio]. He’s coaching five guys, and he’s also calling the offense. I thought Steve was one of the few individuals that I would trust to do that. I think he’s that good and that focused. We’ve been together, and it’s not a new offense. It’s the same offense. It’s got his stamp on. It’s got his personality on it. I thought that Scot Loeffler and Brian White did an excellent job with it. Scot especially during our two minute drill was the manager of that situation, and I thought he did a really nice job. I was more worried about the mechanics of the conversation, and we can improve, but I thought it went very well.”

Senior Quarterback Tim Tebow

On playing limited time vs. Charleston Southern:

“I feel good. I didn’t take too many hits on Saturday. It’s nice. I think it was the coaches’ goal not to have me get hit much. It’s good to stay away from contact, stay fresh, and get ready for games in the future.”

On the hurry-up offense:

“It’s a fast-paced, no huddle offense. I think it worked well. It’s tough for a defense to get used to, especially when they don’t know it’s coming. It’s something we’ve practiced, feel comfortable with and like to play. It gives us a different style to go play in. Going up hitting them in the mouth feels good. It’s worked well whenever we used it in a game. You have to be really well-conditioned because it is so fast tempo, especially the linemen and the receivers out wide who are running back and forth and getting back on the ball. I think our guys are getting used to it and we’re growing more comfortable with it. We have different calls for it, but ‘Bonsai’ could be one of them. Bonsai is not the play, but it’s to get them going.”

On if he learns about the progression of players once they are in a game situation:

“A little bit. I think you find that out in two a days, in fall camp, and the first few games you’re going to be finding it out, especially the timing with the guys you go to in certain situations. That’s just natural to have as you go through a season. Look at a guy like David Nelson last year. He went from having very little contribution to catching touchdown passes to win a national championship. That just shows the difference a year can make.”

On wide receiver Riley Cooper:

“I think he is an elite receiver in college football. He’s definitely an underrated player. He’s very athletic, very tough. He can catch deep balls, hitches, but he also blocks and cracks back at people. He is tough and is the kind of guy you want to bring into tough games with you. He is the type of guy who will go and give everything he has, and that’s a guy you want during the game.”

Gators should have been embarassed to schedule Charleston Southern for the home opener

Gators really should be embarassed for sheduling this game. Gators would have had better competition playing against themselves. I sensed that the team was not very excited about the game. All the players seemed bored during the pregame Gator Walk. I guess the best thing to come out of this game was no injuries.

None the less the game went the way it should have. The defense did not give up a touchdown and no major injuires. I am not disappointed about the yards given up because the second and third string players got valuable playing time and Urban Meyer said its important to have depth but he did admit that we were not challenged. Although it was a boring game I enjoyed going back to the swamp and spending quality time with my daughter Jasmine.
